Around the 12th century Chinese invented the cannon, which most likely evolved from a fire lance, revolutionised battle.
It was very widely used in warfare and transformed warfare tactics, allowing them to pierce previously impenetrable armour and fortifications.
It spread fast outside China, eventually reaching the Middle East and Europe by the 14th century.
Later, larger bombards were introduced, capable of shooting up to 300-pound projectiles, aided in warfare during the 15th and 16th centuries.
Fast forward to today, cannon evolve to modern artillery, such as self-propelled, anti-aircraft, and naval weapons, which play a major role in warfare
