Why do humans have different blood group types?

The presence or lack of particular antigens on red blood cells is determined by the ABO gene on chromosome 9, resulting in different blood groups.

The four main blood groups are A, B, AB, and O, each with its own RhD antigen, resulting in Rh-positive or Rh-negative blood.

The ABO gene, consisting of three main alleles: A, B, and O, determines a person's blood group, a combination of alleles inherited from their parents.

Individuals with two A alleles have type A blood, while those with two B alleles have type B blood.

Furthermore, individuals with type AB blood inherit one A and one B allele, while those with type O blood inherit two O alleles.
