YouTube was started in San Bruno, California, in 2005 by three former PayPal employees: Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim.
Hurley and Chen created YouTube to address the limitations of most online platforms in sharing videos from dinner parties.
Later, YouTube, acquired by Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion.
In 2011, it was ranked among Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World", criticised for spreading disinformation and hate speech.
Today, YouTube has become the world's largest video-sharing network with over 2 billion active users.
