By MindStick

On July 13, 1966, Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896-1977) founded ISKCON in New York City.

He was a Gaudiya Vaishnava Hindu spiritual teacher and author, established ISKCON with the goal of spreading Krishna consciousness around the world.

ISKCON is a Hindu monotheistic religious organisation that worships Krishna and practises bhakti-yoga through chanting, meditation, and text study.

It rapidly expanded from New York City to major US cities establishing over 100 temples and centers in 30 countries by Prabhupada's death in 1977.

Now, ISKCON has over 800 centres and temples in over 100 countries, as well as millions of devotees around the world.
