World’s first chess machine

By MindStick

El Ajedrecista, the world's first chess machine, was constructed in 1912 by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo.

The electromechanical automaton, which played rook and king versus king endgames, served as a precursor to modern computer chess engines.

El Ajedrecista's achievement prompted other engineers and scientists to create their own chess-playing machines.

Leonardo Torres Quevedo's AI prototype, El Ajedrecista, is currently on display at Madrid's Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología de España.

Today, Its achievement is in chess and artificial intelligence history, where computer chess engines can outsmart even the most skilled human players.
