Lester A. Dine, a dental photographer, created the ring light in 1952.
He was looking for a way to improve the clarity of his patients' dental photographs by employing a circle lamp for even, shadowless illumination.
His first ring light was constructed of fluorescent tubes, but eventually replaced by LEDs because of its energy efficiency and longer longevity.
Later, it gained popularity in photography and videography due to its soft, pleasing light and diverse effects.
In the early 2010s it became popular among beauty bloggers, vloggers, photographers, videographers, makeup professionals, and content creators.
