Strange looking basket star

By Anjita D.

Basket stars are brittle stars that are members of the echinoderm family, which also includes starfish, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers.

They have long, branching arms, radiating from a central disc, covered in tiny hooks, and use these arms to catch prey.

They are prevalent in tropical and subtropical waters, found in all oceans, from shallows to deep sea depths.

Despite being slow-moving animals, they can live for many years, with some species exceeding 30 years, and can regenerate lost limbs.

They reproduce sexually, releasing sperm & eggs into water for fertilisation & larvae development, while asexually can split into multiple individuals
