Origin of Hindi

By MindStick

Hindi's roots can be traced back to Sanskrit, an ancient Indo-Aryan language spoken in India approximately 1500 BC.

"Hindi" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Sindhu," which means "of or belonging to India" and refers to ancient India's westernmost limit.

The title "Hindi" was first used to describe the language spoken in the Indus River valley region and later extended to other parts of India.

Due to centuries of foreign control in India, Hindi with Sanskrit roots has been impacted by Persian, Arabic, and English.

Today, Hindi is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations, spoken in countries like Fiji, Mauritius, and Suriname.
