From 3300 to 1300 BC, the Indus Valley Civilization is thought to have established the habit of women wearing cotton or wool sarees.
The choli, or blouse, is a fitting top garment worn with the saree. It's thought to have started during the Maurya dynasty (322-185 BC).
Furthermore, early blouses were simple and made of cotton or linen. They were usually sleeveless and knotted at the back.
The saree and blouse evolved over time to become increasingly complex and ornamental.
Later, different regions of India evolved their own distinct types of sarees and blouses.
