The Sahara Desert has been green several times during its history, with the oldest documented wet episode happening roughly 7-8 million years ago.
Geological records such as preserved pollen and lake deposits provide evidence for this.
Although, there is still disagreement about whether the Sahara was fully green during this time period or if some desert portions remained.
The climate of the Sahara was formerly wetter & more friendly to life, with certain desert parts remaining even during humid seasons than it is today.
Despite its present dry spell, scientists expect that the Sahara will ultimately revert to green, possibly over tens of thousands of years.
