Whatsapp Origin

By MindStick

Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both former Yahoo! employees, founded WhatsApp in February 2009.

Koum got the concept for WhatsApp after purchasing an iPhone in January 2009 and being fascinated by the App Store's possibilities.

He imagined an app that displays phone contact statuses while talking with Acton and brainstorming at Alex Fishman's house in West San Jose.

Fishman and Acton identified Igor Solomennikov, a Russian developer, as the ideal iPhone developer for further development.

Solomennikov collaborated with Koum and Acton on WhatsApp's initial version, released in 2009, which gained popularity later.
