Origin of sugar

By MindStick

Sugar may be traced back to India, where sugarcane was originally domesticated approximately 8,000 BCE.

In the 1st century AD, Indians found means to convert raw sugarcane juice into granulated crystals, converting it from chewing to eating.

Later, sugarcane farming extended from India to China, Middle East and other parts of Asia.

Sugar manufacturing originated in the Mediterranean region in the 10th century AD, and the Portuguese took it to the Americas in the 16th century.

It is now globally consumed food & beverage, used in various foods & beverages, and in industrial products like pharmaceuticals, cosmetics & plastics.
