Cai Lun, a Han Dynasty court official, created a paper in China in the 2nd century BC.
He was experimenting with various materials in order to develop a more durable & cost-effective writing material than traditional bamboo & silk scroll
He made a pulp out of hemp, rags, and fishnets, which he dried and stretched out over a screen to write on.
Paper immediately gained popularity in China after this discovery. It had spread to Korea, Japan, and the Middle East by the 7th century.
Today, paper is a widely used, versatile material for writing, printing, packaging, and hygiene, and can be recycled multiple times.
