In 1817, German Baron Karl von Drais is credited with inventing the bicycle.
His invention, dubbed the "swiftwalker" or "draisine," was a two-wheeled wooden vehicle with no pedals.
The first pedal-powered bicycle was created in 1853 by French inventor Pierre Michaux, who fitted pedals to the front wheel of a velocipede.
The "safety bicycle," created by Englishman John Kemp Starley in 1885, featured a diamond frame and a chain drive to the rear wheel.
Bicycles are still widely used for transportation and recreation today. They're also employed in sports like road racing, mountain biking, and BMX.
