Zombie starfish are real-life starfish that have been affected by a mysterious disease known as sea star wasting syndrome (SSWS).
SSWS is a contagious disease that produces lesions in starfish bodies, resulting in limbs falling off and bodies disintegrating.
SSWS was originally identified in 2013 and has now spread to over 20 starfish species along North America's west coast.
Warming ocean temperatures, pollution, and overfishing are suggested to be contributing reasons to the disease.
Unfortunately, some of their species populations have declined by up to 90%.
