Memes can be traced back to the dawn of human society, when people began sharing ideas and stories with one another.
The term "meme" was first used in 1976 by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene.
Dawkins suggested that memes are comparable to genes in that they can multiply, mutate, and compete for life.
It exists in human minds and is handed down through social interaction and speech.
Hence, the first internet meme is generally considered to be the Dancing Baby.
