Why does your mouth tingle after eating pineapple?

By MindStick

Pineapple is acidic in nature. It contains a proteolytic enzyme called bromelain, which breaks down proteins.

Bromelain can cause a tingling sensation in your mouth as its breakdown of proteins releases amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins.

Amino acids can irritate the nerve endings in your mouth. Moreover, it also breaks down the mucus that protects your mouth lining.

To help reduce the tingling sensation: Cut the pineapple into small pieces, eat the pineapple with other foods, or eat it ripe.

After eating pineapple, some people experience severe symptoms, such as swelling of the tongue and throat, difficulty breathing, and hives.
