Why must everyone know about the Sandeshkhali incident?

Playing text to speech

Since last week, extraordinary sightings of protests and political developments have occurred in Sandeshkhali, a village in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas that had been largely overlooked until last month, when news of an attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials by a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader surfaced.

However, the protests that have taken place since February 8 are not directly tied to the disagreement between the state and union administrations. Instead, they are concerned about hundreds of women who allege that top Trinamool Congress (TMC) officials in the region have unleashed a reign of terror on local women.

On Tuesday, a special ten-member female police team led by IPS Soma Das Mitra paid a visit to West Bengal's violent Sandeshkhali hamlet.

According to police sources, "We assured all of them of their safety and security, but not a single woman complained of sexual harassment." We promised them that they could file complaints without fear, yet we still couldn't identify a single report of sexual harassment.

"Our first aim is to instill trust in the villages so that ordinary women may speak to us freely and file grievances with us. If somebody comes to us with a complaint, we will assist them and guarantee complete cooperation and an independent examination of their allegations," they stated.

According to rumors, the special police squad may return to the area on Thursday.

Meanwhile, BJP workers headed by the party's state president, Sukanta Majumdar, battled with police in Basirhat after being prevented from conducting a demonstration. The police said that the demonstrators threw stones at them, and there is camera footage to identify individuals responsible. Several police officers were hurt amid the fighting.

Majumdar had taken a local train in the morning, expecting police to bar him from reaching Basirhat, an area in the same north 24 Parganas district where prohibitory orders on big gatherings are in effect.
