The extraordinary Elvis Presley life story began on January 8, 1935, when Elvis Aaron Presley was born in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Vernon and Gladys Presley. Elvis and his parents relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1948, where he graduated from Humes High School in 1953.

Elvis' musical inspirations were the pop and country music of the day, gospel music he heard in church and at the all-night gospel sings he frequented, and black R&B he absorbed as a Memphis adolescent on historic Beale Street.

Elvis Presley began his singing career in 1954 with the famed Sun Records company in Memphis. RCA Victor purchased his recording contract in late 1955. He was an international sensation by 1956. Elvis served his country in the United States Army without any of the unique benefits that his famous position may have provided him.
